Bruno Fernandes has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Real Madrid, with reports suggesting that the Spanish giants are considering a move for the Manchester United captain this summer.
The Portuguese midfielder, who has been at Old Trafford since 2020, has become a pivotal figure for the Red Devils and was handed the captain’s armband in 2023.
Despite signing a long-term contract extension earlier this season, which ties him to United until 2027, Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing Fernandes as a potential replacement for Luka Modric, whose contract expires this summer.
Modric, who turns 40 in September, is nearing the end of his illustrious career at the Bernabeu, and Madrid are planning a squad overhaul to prepare for the future.
According to The Daily Star, Real Madrid scouts have been monitoring Fernandes closely, attending “virtually every United match” in recent weeks to assess his performances. With the reigning European champions looking to refresh their midfield, Fernandes has reportedly been identified as a key target to succeed Modric.
This interest presents a potential dilemma for Manchester United. Fernandes recently confirmed that he had an offer to leave United last summer but chose to stay.
“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave… They said what they wanted from me, and I just asked if they still see me as part of the future of the club,” Fernandes told BBC Sport.
With Fernandes now firmly on their radar, it remains to be seen whether Los Blancos will make a formal move this summer to bring him to the Bernabeu.
