Alonso completed his final training session before Real Madrid flew to Miami

Xabi Alonso conducted his final training session as Real Madrid’s new manager before the team’s departure for the Club World Cup in Miami, focusing heavily on implementing an aggressive pressing system to address one of the team’s key weaknesses from the previous season.

The session featured a comprehensive ten-versus-ten training match, allowing recent arrivals Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold to integrate with their new teammates. The duo trained alongside the star-studded midfield of Luka Modric, Kylian Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Jude Bellingham, while three internationals – Vinicius Junior, Andriy Lunin, and Arda Guler – await the squad’s arrival in Miami.

Alonso’s emphasis on pressing marks a significant tactical shift for Real Madrid, drawing from his successful tenure at Bayer Leverkusen where his teams were known for their intense, coordinated pressing and quick transitions. The Spanish tactician has already implemented similar principles at Madrid, combining physical conditioning with tactical drills to prepare for their Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal on Wednesday.

The injury situation remains a concern for Los Blancos, with key defenders Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and David Alaba participating in only partial training. Additionally, Ferland Mendy, Eduardo Camavinga, and new signing Endrick continue their rehabilitation programs, though they will travel with the squad to maintain team cohesion.

Alonso’s appointment represents Madrid’s first managerial change mid-season since Zinedine Zidane replaced Rafael Benitez in 2016. The former Liverpool and Madrid midfielder brings a wealth of tactical knowledge from his playing days under Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola, combined with his innovative coaching approach that led Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga.

The Club World Cup presents Alonso’s first opportunity to implement his vision on the global stage, with Madrid aiming to extend their record as the tournament’s most successful club with an eighth title.
