South Africa’s World Cup hopes take a massive hit as veteran midfielder Themba Zwane receives a three-match FIFA ban, ending his group stage.

South Africa’s World Cup ambitions have suffered a devastating blow after veteran playmaker Themba Zwane was hit with a severe three-match suspension by FIFA.
The 36-year-old midfielder was sent off just 23 minutes into his substitute appearance against Mexico on June 11. Following a VAR review, the referee dismissed Zwane for an off-the-ball incident involving Roberto Alvarado. FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee subsequently upgraded the standard punishment to a three-game ban, citing serious foul play.
The harsh ruling completely sidelines the 55-cap international for the remainder of Bafana Bafana’s grueling Group A campaign.
With their talismanic attacker unavailable, South Africa faces an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout rounds, though a potential appeal remains on the table.
