Thomas Muller, one of Bayern Munich’s most iconic figures, has announced he will leave the German giants this summer, bringing an end to his remarkable 25-year association with the club. The 35-year-old midfielder revealed the decision in a joint statement with Bayern, confirming his contract will not be extended beyond the current season.
“My 25 years as an FC Bayern Munich player will come to an end in the summer,” Muller stated. “It’s been an incredible journey, shaped by unique experiences, great encounters and unforgettable triumphs.”
Muller’s Bayern career began when he joined the club’s academy as a 10-year-old in 2000. Since then, he has established himself as a club legend, making a record 743 appearances and helping the team secure an astonishing 33 trophies. His contributions to Bayern’s success have been immeasurable, playing crucial roles in multiple Bundesliga titles and Champions League triumphs.
Club president Herbert Hainer described Muller as “the definition of a Bavarian fairytale career,” highlighting how the player “grew in Bavaria and with Bayern.” Hainer added that Muller “ranks among the most outstanding personalities in FC Bayern history.”
The midfielder’s final appearance for Bayern will come at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer, providing a fitting international stage for his farewell.
Throughout his career, Muller has been known for his exceptional tactical intelligence, versatility, and uncanny ability to find space in attacking positions. His “Raumdeuter” (space interpreter) playing style revolutionized modern football tactics and influenced a generation of players.
Beyond his club achievements, Muller has also enjoyed tremendous success with the German national team, winning the World Cup in 2014 and earning over 100 caps for his country.
As Muller prepares for the next chapter in his career, his departure marks the end of an era for both the player and Bayern Munich.
