Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger could be sidelined for up to 12 matches following his explosive confrontation with referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea during the Copa del Rey final defeat to Barcelona.
The German international was dismissed in the closing moments of the dramatic 3-2 extra-time loss after throwing an object, reportedly ice, in the direction of the match official. According to the referee’s post-match report, Rudiger “had to be restrained by several members of the coaching staff, displaying an aggressive attitude” after being shown the red card.
Spanish outlet Cadena SER reports that Rudiger’s punishment could range from four to 12 matches, potentially ending his season prematurely. The incident occurred shortly after Jules Kounde’s 116th-minute winner secured Barcelona’s record-extending 32nd Copa del Rey title.
The confrontation marked the culmination of pre-existing tensions between Real Madrid and the officiating team. De Burgos Bengoetxea had broken down in tears during a pre-match press conference when discussing criticism from Real Madrid TV, creating a charged atmosphere before the final even began.
Rudiger wasn’t the only Madrid player disciplined, as Lucas Vazquez was also sent off for protesting decisions and entering the field “making gestures of disagreement.” England star Jude Bellingham received a post-match red card for approaching officials “in an aggressive attitude.”
The disciplinary fallout adds another chapter to this season’s heated El Clásico rivalry, with Barcelona now having won all three encounters against Madrid. The timing is particularly problematic for Real Madrid, who remain in contention for La Liga and Champions League honors.
The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee will review the incidents in the coming days, with their decision potentially having significant implications for Madrid’s remaining fixtures. The clubs are scheduled to meet again in La Liga next month in what could be a title-deciding clash.
