Gary Cahill issues reality check to Max Dowman

Former England stalwart Gary Cahill has cast doubt on Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman’s chances of crashing Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite making history as the Premier League’s youngest-ever goalscorer against Everton in March, the 16-year-old faces a nearly impossible task to breach a star-studded midfield.

Cahill noted that while Dowman’s talent is undeniable, the sheer depth of personnel—including Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Declan Rice—means “a hell of a lot of players” will inevitably miss out.

England kick off their campaign against Croatia in Texas in just under 50 days, and Tuchel is reportedly narrowing down a preliminary 35-man list to the final 26 for North America.

Lee Carsley has backed the teenager for a “fantastic future,” but at just 16 and without a senior start, the leap to a major tournament is viewed as too steep.

Current squad competition is fierce, with Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson, and the recently recalled Kobbie Mainoo all fighting for limited seats in the middle of the park.

Even with minor injury concerns in the camp, the Three Lions are considered firm favorites to claim their first title since 1966 with their existing veteran core.

The general consensus among pundits, including Gareth Barry, remains that Dowman’s development should be managed carefully rather than rushed into the pressure cooker of a World Cup.
