Borussia Dortmund cut the gap at the top of the Bundesliga to three points on Friday night, cruising to a dominant 4-0 victory over Mainz. In a display of aerial supremacy, wing-back Julian Ryerson provided a staggering four assists to spark Dortmund’s biggest league win of the season.

Serhou Guirassy ignited the rout after just 10 minutes, heading home a Ryerson free kick before Maximilian Beier doubled the advantage shortly after. The Norwegian architect was at it again before the break, swinging a corner onto the head of Guirassy to secure the striker’s brace and his own third assist of the half.
Guirassy, who had struggled with a form slump either side of Christmas, has now refound his clinical edge with five goals in his last three outings. With seven minutes remaining, Ryerson completed his masterclass by delivering another corner for Ramy Bensebaini to thump home through a crowded penalty area.
The victory marks a sixth consecutive win for Niko Kovac’s side, who trailed leaders Bayern Munich by 11 points at Christmas. With a massive title showdown against Bayern looming in two weeks, Dortmund appear to have exorcised the ghosts of their 2023 final-day heartbreak against this same Mainz opposition.
